Senior Portrait Questions — Mike Fox Photography, Pearland TX
Mike Fox Photography is a senior portrait studio based in Pearland, TX, serving families across the Houston and Galveston area. Sessions are 2 to 3 hours on location with a two-person team. The session fee is $199; portrait packages start at $1,200. Common questions about the process, pricing, and session experience are answered here.
How much does a senior portrait session cost?
There are two separate costs.
The session fee is $199. It covers the session itself (Mike and Angi's time, two to three hours on location, full direction and lighting) and holds your shoot date. It's paid at the consultation when you book.
Portrait packages are separate. They start at $1,200 and are chosen at the in-person ordering appointment after the session, once you've seen your images. Most families spend around $2,000 at the ordering appointment.

When should we book?
The consultation should be scheduled in the summer before senior year. The preferred shoot window is September through December: widest availability, most flexibility to reschedule if needed, and no graduation deadline pressure. For graduation delivery, the cutoff is mid-April: that allows time for the ordering appointment and approximately one month for products to arrive by late May. If summer has passed, the right time to schedule is now.

What happens at the consultation?
The consultation is free and takes about an hour.
You see images from each of the nine shooting locations and choose where to shoot. You talk through outfit count and style. You review package pricing for reference. You see and hold the actual physical products (albums, wall art, prints) before committing to anything. If you want to book after the consultation, the $199 session fee is paid at that point.
What does a session actually look like?
Two to three hours on location. Mike handles the camera, posing, and direction for the entire session. Angi manages the lights, sequences outfits across locations, demonstrates poses physically so your senior knows exactly what to do, and keeps the energy easy throughout.
At least one parent or guardian is expected to be there; both parents or a sibling sometimes come along. Outfit changes are built into the session flow.
What to expect at your senior portrait session
Where do you shoot?
Nine regular locations across the Houston and Galveston area: Downtown Houston, Eleanor Tinsley Park, Hermann Park, The Galveston Strand, the Beach, Brazos Bend State Park, The Castle, Heritage Park, and Oyster Creek Park. Professional portable lighting is on every session.
Custom locations are also possible: a record store, a vintage shop, a family property, somewhere that has personal meaning. The location needs to be large enough for a two-plus-hour session on its own, or close enough to one of the regular spots to combine.

How many outfits should my senior bring?
Bring up to seven. The session typically shoots five complete looks.
Cap and gown and letter jackets are additions layered over existing outfits; they don't replace one of the five looks. After booking, a guidance email goes out with specific suggestions on variety. Variety across dress level, color family, and silhouette produces a better gallery than seven versions of the same thing.

Can my senior bring a prop (an instrument, sports gear, a car)?
Yes. Personal elements are encouraged. Sessions work best when they include something that's genuinely part of who your senior is. It works best if you mention it at the consultation so it can be worked into the plan.
Do you offer cap and gown senior portraits?
About 30 to 40 percent of Mike Fox Photography sessions include cap and gown. There's no separate charge for it. Mike Fox Photography shoots cap and gown the same way it shoots everything else: on location, with professional lighting and real direction. The result looks like the actual person.

How do we see the images after the session?
At the in-person ordering appointment, about a week to ten days after the session.
Images are shown on a screen large enough to see them the way they'd actually look on a wall. This is the first time you'll see them, and it's when the order is placed. Everyone who'll have input on what gets purchased should plan to attend. After the order is placed and images are retouched, a private gallery is created for selecting smaller print sizes (8x12 and under).
How the ordering appointment works
Is the $199 session fee a deposit?
No. The session fee covers the session and holds the shoot date. Portrait packages are separate and chosen at the ordering appointment, after you've seen the images. The session fee is not applied toward packages.
When are products delivered?
Approximately one month after the ordering appointment. The ordering appointment is about 10 days after the session. A mid-April session puts products in your hands by late May. Albums and wall art take the same amount of time.
What if my teen doesn't want to do senior portraits?
Reluctance is a starting point Mike Fox Photography knows well. Sessions run on real locations with real direction, and two to three hours in, most skeptical seniors have shifted. Mike and Angi raised three teenagers of their own and have been working with high school seniors since 2012. If your teen is resistant, the consultation is a good place to start: your senior can see the actual work and decide if it's something they want to try. Seniors who show up willing (even skeptical willing) tend to do well.

What if we don't love the images?
The process is designed to prevent that outcome.
At the consultation, you've seen Mike Fox Photography's work across different seniors and locations. At the ordering appointment, you see your images on screen before purchasing anything. Every decision is made with full information in front of you. Disappointment is rare, and the reason is the process itself.
But if you truly don’t like the images, at the ordering session we would just refund your session fee.
What if my senior doesn't like their portraits?
Can a friend or sibling come to the session?
Yes. A friend or sibling is welcome. If you'd like a quick photo with them, let Mike and Angi know in advance and they'll work it in.
Are there any additional fees?
No additional fees from Mike Fox Photography beyond the session fee and package. Some locations require permits, but Mike Fox Photography handles and pays those, and that cost isn't passed to clients. A few specific spots carry a per-use fee (Centennial Garden inside Hermann Park is one example); if a session includes one of those, that fee is the client's responsibility, it would be added to the session fee. A makeup artist is available if arranged at the consultation; the client pays the artist directly.
How do I get started?
Schedule a free consultation. You look through the work, talk through the process, and decide if it's the right fit. All of that happens before any money changes hands. If you want to book, the $199 session fee is paid at that point.
Ready to Schedule a Consultation?
The consultation is free and there's no commitment to book. You'll see the work, hold the actual products, and get a clear picture of the process from start to finish. If it's the right fit, the $199 session fee holds your date. If it isn't, you've spent nothing.
